Expanded screen: live talk with Carla Abraão
Original title: Tela expandidaA conversation between Joaçaba and New York about what happens when cinema leaves the dark room and enters the museum.
What it was
On 13 June 2025, at 6:30 pm (Brasília time), the Rachadura Visual channel hosted educator and curator Carla Abraão for a talk on the links between contemporary art, cinema, video art and video installation.
Carla spoke about her career and about video art and video installation in museums, reflecting on the curatorial and educational strategies international museums use to bring audiences closer to these hybrid languages.
The guest
Based in New York, Carla Abraão works as an educator at MoMA, the Guggenheim and the Brooklyn Museum, leading tours of temporary exhibitions and modern and contemporary collections, and also works as an independent curator. She holds a master’s in Visual Arts (Art History) from UDESC and a bachelor’s in Film from UNESPAR, and has taught in the Film programme at UFSC.
“Bringing these experiences into an open conversation with artists and audiences in Joaçaba is key to thinking about the internationalisation of our work and to affirming that the countryside is also a place of circulation, reflection and experimentation.”
Rudolfo Auffinger
Who it was for

Format and support
Free YouTube live, still available on the channel. Part of the Porão project, funded by the City of Joaçaba through its culture department, under Culture Grant Call no. 006/2024/PMJ.

The in-person gathering
On March 27, 2025, at 7 p.m., Tela Expandida took shape at Casa da Cultura Rogério Sganzerla, in Joaçaba (Santa Catarina, Brazil): a free talk on visual arts and cinema through video art and video installation, moderated by Rudolfo Auffinger, with a virtual appearance by curator and educator Carla Abraão — MA in Visual Arts (UDESC), BA in Film (UNESPAR) and educator at MoMA, the Guggenheim and the Brooklyn Museum, in New York.
The evening featured lip-sync and singing performances by Flávia Pacchely and Oliver Pasetti, which opened the conversation about the creative process of the video installation Vem de Berço, and a screening of the video dance Danças do Cotidiano (Everyday Dances), by João Tomaz, with five workers from Joaçaba and audio description. The gathering was part of the Porão project, supported by Joaçaba’s 006/2024 arts funding call. Photos: Gabi Bresola.
