Origin

This project grew out of an idea for another work. From early on, LGBT narratives have always been a central theme. When we created O Peito da Pele, our intention was to go beyond the limits of the screen and of conventional cinematic space. Returning to Joaçaba in 2020, I felt a strong urge to give new meaning to this place, full of conflict, and to reflect on the relationship between childhood and heteronormative, often oppressive environments.

Process

As part of the process of reconnecting with the city and of personal healing, I sought to meet and connect with LGBT people from here, bringing them into the community. In this context, the project took shape as a generational encounter, aiming to understand the realities of childhood and the first discoveries about sexuality.

Once these people were found, the creative process was shared with them. We had an initial phase of meetings, listening and conversation, seeking to understand these realities, with participants of different age groups – from 16 to 50 years old. From the stories shared, we identified three actions per character that make up the mosaic of narratives.

The proposal of Tango was then to isolate these actions so that the meanings they carry in a child’s context could emerge. In childhood, these actions take on a greater dimension than they really have, leaving a deep mark. We looked for small actions that, repeated, would build the sense of sexuality and gender identity, always influenced by the views of society, parents and family. These expectations are often unrealistic and hard to reach, reflecting the weight of external pressure on bodies and identities.
